Lindsay Lohan‘s acting career got a major revival thanks to Netflix, which produced and released three holiday-themed romantic comedies headlined by Lohan over a three-year span: “Falling for Christmas” (2022), “Irish Wish” (2024) and “Our Little Secret” (2024). Lohan’s presence powered the films to streaming success, with each movie opening at the top of the Netflix film charts. “Our Little Secret” earned 32.4 million views in its debut weekend, giving Lohan’s latest Netflix title her biggest streaming launch yet.
While one might assume Lohan’s Netflix success would lead her to keep on making original movies for the streaming giant, the actor said in a new interview with Elle magazine that her acting interests are now going beyond Netflix.
“I always want to make movies like that—things that make people happy and bring people together,” Lohan said of her Netflix hits. “I love making movies for that reason—for people to escape and find something that they can take into their own life and realize everything’s going to be okay. But with Netflix, I was like, ‘Okay, now we need to be thinking about other stuff.’ I can’t do movies like these forever.”
Next up for Lohan is a return to movie theaters with the highly-anticipated release of “Freakier Friday,” the sequel to 2003’s “Freaky Friday.” Lohan and original co-star Jamie Lee Curtis are back for the new installment, which opens in theaters Aug. 8 from Disney.
“It’s easygoing,” Lohan told Elle about the sequel. “I feel like everything felt at ease when we were making it, and I feel that’s the best way to describe how I felt when I watched it. It felt easy and fun, and fresh at the same time. There’s not a lot bringing me to the movie theaters personally right now. [Freakier Friday] is a feel-good movie, which is what I want to give people. And it’s fun. When I saw the second cut, I wanted to get up and dance at the end. I was like, ‘Oh, this is cool. I like this song. I want people to do that.'”
Lohan signed a two-picture deal with Netflix after making “Falling for Christmas,” which resulted in her two 2024 streaming releases. While she has acting aspirations beyond Netflix movies, Lohan isn’t abandoning streaming completely. As reported by Variety earlier this year, Lohan is starring in and executive producing the Hulu series “Count My Lies,” based on the novel of the same name. If greenlit, “Count My Lies” will mark Lohan’s first lead role in a TV series.
