VFX Studio Cinesite Launches Gen AI Research Unit (EXCLUSIVE)

VFX studio Cinesite has launched TechX, an internal unit aimed at researching and developing applications of generative AI tech for content creation. It also aims to encourage collaboration in these areas with studios, filmmakers and tech developers.

“While we fully recognize the many open questions and challenges associated with generative AI technologies, Cinesite will proactively explore how these technologies can be harnessed to serve artists, developers and producers working in the  VFX, animation and immersive industries,” said Michele Sciolette, CTO of the Cinesite group of VFX and animation studios. “[TechX is] ready to collaborate closely with our existing network of clients, solution providers and other interested parties. In combination with many other key R&D initiatives across our group, TechX represents a critical element in our AI strategy, ensuring our incredible artists have the best possible tools to continue delivering the exceptional work we are known for. ”

The TechX team, which will report to Sciolette, will be led by gen AI lead Andrew McNamara, whose credits include “Black Panther: Wakanda Forever;” gen AI 2D supervisor Alexey Kuchinski, whos credits include “The Family Plan;” and gen AI tech supervisor and software developer Johan Valfridsson.

Cinesite’s recent projects include Alex Garland’s “Warfare,” Michael Jackson biopic “Michael,” Amazon’s Viola Davis-starring “G2O” and Paramount Animation’s Chris Miller-helmed “Smurfs” film.

TechX will operate independently from active shows and Sciolette will also oversee an AI advisory council from across the Cinesite group. Said McNamara, “With artists at the forefront, these transformative new tools have the potential to accelerate the creative process.”

The Cinesite group recently raised $215 million. NatWest Corporate Bank led the financing of the Cinesite investment, alongside the studio’s existing banks Barclays and Santander.
