‘The Bear’ or ‘Shrinking’? Breaking Down the Top Contenders for the Best Comedy Series Emmy

Variety TV editors Michael Schneider and Emily Longeretta are on Variety’s Award Circuit, presented by Paramount+, to discuss the top contenders in the comedy race at this year’s Emmy Awards.

Two of the major contenders in this year’s Emmy race are “The Bear” and “Hacks,” which have both won in the past.

‘”Hacks,’ of course, was the big winner last time out. A surprise to everyone, we were expecting ‘The Bear’ to pick up another win, but ‘Hacks’ won the day, so they are the incumbent winner now,” said Schneider. “Jean Smart has been winning every single year and she’ll continue to as long as that national treasure is in this category.”

Even though “The Bear” lost to “Hacks” last year, it will be a major player in this year’s race.

“It has 36 noms in the past, 21 wins, Jeremy Allen White, Ayo Edebiri, Ebon Moss-Bachrach, Liza Colon-Zayas, who was a huge upset last year. Give her all her flowers. Guest wins dominated last year, Jon Bernthal and Jamie Lee Curtis in that incredible Christmas episode. Creator Christopher Storer won directing last year,” Longeretta said. “While they lost to’ Hacks,’ they won everything else. It was very impressive. While this last season wasn’t as talked about, it’s the timing of the release. So another season is going to come out around the same time as Emmy voting.”

“Abbott Elementary” could be another powerful force this year.

“‘Abbott Elementary’ is the great broadcast hope. It continues to get nominated. It’s got 24 noms over the history of the show. Four wins overall. It didn’t really do that well last year, which is concerning because ‘Abbott’ continues to improve on itself every season. I’d argue that this may have been the best season yet of the show. Quinta Brunson, who won best actress in 2023, is back. Sheryl Lee Ralph, who’s also won in the past, Tyler James Williams and Janelle James have been nominated in the past, but this entire cast is fantastic. They all deserve their moment, and hopefully that’ll continue,” Schneider said.
