“Steal This Story, Please!,” a documentary about the life and career of independent investigative journalist Amy Goodman, has debuted a new trailer in advance of its theatrical release. The film explores Goodman’s work on “Democracy Now!,” an hour-long TV, radio, and internet news program told from a progressive point of view. It celebrates its 30th anniversary this year.
The film was directed by Oscar-nominated, Emmy Award-winning filmmakers Tia Lessin and Carl Deal, the team behind “Trouble the Water” and “Citizen Koch.” “Steal This Story, Please!” will premiere on April 10 at IFC Center in New York. On April 17, it will debut in Los Angeles at Laemmle Noho, Royal and Glendale, as well as in San Francisco at The Roxie. Additional markets throughout the rollout will include Seattle, Portland, Boston, Baltimore, Philly, Chicago, Atlanta, Minneapolis, Houston, Austin and Dallas. Goodman will do Q&As at many screenings.
The film is being released as newsrooms shrink, the mainstream media consolidates and social media manipulates the meaning of truth. It presents Goodman as an important figure in the movement for independent media that amplifies voices that are often left out of the conversation.
“Steal This Story, Please!” world premiered and opened the DC/DOX film festival in Washington, D.C. on June 12, 2025. It has been a staple of the festival circuit, winning audience awards at Palm Springs International Film Festival, Seattle International Film Festival DocFest, Woodstock Film Festival, Mill Valley International Film Festival, St. Louis International Film Festival, Hamptons Docfest, Santa Barbara Film Festival and the Santa Fe International Film Festival.
