Rebecca Ferguson Only Has ‘One Scene’ in ‘Dune 3’: ‘There’s a Lot of FOMO’ but ‘This Is Just What It Is’

Rebecca Ferguson may have her moment in the “Dune: Part Three” trailer, but Lady Jessica’s screen time in the latest installment of Denis Villeneuve’s sci-fi franchise doesn’t extend much further than that.

During a recent appearance on Josh Horowitz’s “Happy Sad Confused” podcast, the British-Swedish actress revealed that she’s actually only in one scene of the third and final “Dune” film.

“The script is great, I’ve read it. I think it’s going to be fantastic, but my journey was number one and two,” Ferguson said. “I don’t even think [Lady Jessica] was supposed to be in three, and then Denis was like, ‘I need to have one scene.’ And I get one scene.”

Indeed, Lady Jessica — the mom of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides who is also known simply as the Reverend Mother — is mostly absent from Frank Herbert’s 1969 novel “Dune Messiah,” which “Dune 3” is based on. She returns to a larger role in “Children of Dune,” the third of Herbert’s six “Dune” novels.

Ferguson acknowledged that it “was a weird feeling, walking onto a set that you know so well and knowing that you don’t have a part of it.”

She added: “There’s a lot of FOMO, and the acceptance of this is just what it is.”

“Dune 3” is set 17 years after the events of the second “Dune” film, and focuses on Paul Atreides’ internal battle after defeating the Harkonnens, becoming Emperor and initiating a holy war. In the trailer, which dropped on Tuesday, Ferguson is seen in a clip with Chalamet’s Paul where he asks her for advice. “How did father do it?” Paul asks his mother. “Your father never started a war,” Lady Jessica replies icily.

“Dune: Part Three” also stars Zendaya, Jason Momoa, Florence Pugh, Isaach de Bankolé, Charlotte Rampling, Anya Taylor-Joy, Robert Pattinson and Javier Bardem. It’s set to release in theaters on Dec. 18 from Warner Bros.
