Noah Kahan has stepped up with a spirited defense of Chappell Roan, after the “Pink Pony Club” singer went viral for tearing into paparazzi and professional autograph seekers that surrounded her on her way into a Paris restaurant this week.
“Fuck ’em all,” Kahan wrote, of both the paps and the autograph resellers, while particularly singling out the latter, whom he said should not be mistaken for fans and should “eat fucking nails.”
Kahan put up two posts on his Instagram Stories to let it be known just how much he is Team Chappell in this dispute, which has divided social media commenters into separate “yes, celebrities deserve their dignity” and “no, they signed up for this” camps.
In his first post, Kahan displayed a headline about Roan’s run-in with the small crowd she implored to go away and captioned it: “Maybe they should just idk leave her alone? Also those dudes saying ‘I’m a huge fan’ following her around are scalpers and are as bad as the paparazzi. Fuck em all.”
By saying “scalpers,” the singer-songwriter appears to be referring to professional autograph hunters and resellers, one of whom Roan singled out in the viral video.
In a second post, Kahan went on-camera to deliver a more elaborate message about what he considers to be a scourge of purely profit-based autograph resellers who lie in wait for celebs, whom he believes the public may mistake for legitimate fans.
“These people literally find out where you’re staying, where you’re flying into, where your team, family, whoever’s staying, and they are clearly not your fans,” Kahan says in the video message. “They just sit outside places and try to guilt you into signing shit so they can sell it. And they trick people like you who are just watching the video, who don’t know what’s going on, into thinking that someone’s being rude to one of their fans when they’re really just like manipulating you.
He continues: “They’re scummy, they’re manipulative, they’re parasitic, and yeah, fuck ’em. Seriously, fuck them. Don’t feel bad for them. They’re not fans. They’re just businessmen trying to use human beings for profit and for their own gains. So they can get bent — eat fucking nails.”
In the Paris video that precipitated this, Roan was captured on video by an onlooker as she herself used her phone to capture footage of the people she said were harassing her even after she asked them to give her space. (To date, Roan has not published the video she took or publicly acknowledged the incident.)
The video shows Roan capturing a two-shot of herself with someone wielding an apparent 8×10″ for her to sign, and she comments as he first covers his face with the photo, then proudly says “hi” for her camera after she singles him out.
“I’m being disregarded as a human. I’m just trying to go to dinner, and I’ve asked these people several times to get away from me,” Roan is heard saying as she films herself and onlookers. “This person I’ve asked several times to go away, and they will not,. They’re hiding their face, because they’re ashamed… These are all the people that are completely disregarding my boundaries. All of you, I’m asking you kindly to please leave me alone, and stop following me and harassing me. No, I’m not gonna sign. This is what it’s like, if you were wondering how it is.”
