Keith David has been cast in NBC‘s private investigator comedy pilot written by Dan Goor and Luke Del Tredici.

David will play Garner Taggert, whose official character description reads: “He runs the Garner Taggart PI Agency, where his son Mitch and Mickey Wilder are the main PI’s. He’s a tough guy with somewhat antiquated views of the world.”

He joins Jake Johnson, who was previously announced to be playing private investigator Mickey. Mickey is described as “smart, cynical and heartbroken, but trying to pretend he’s not” and a “private investigator with a knack for solving cases” who was “formerly an LAPD cop until his life imploded three years ago.”

Plot details about the project are not yet known outside of its comical logline: “Continues the proud tradition of Los Angeles private eyes that began with Philip Marlowe and will end with this show.”

David is best known for his deep voice, which has earned him Emmys as the narrator of Kens Burns documentaries “Jackie Robinson,” “The War” and “Unforgivable Blackness: The Rise and Fall of Jack Johnson.” His film credits include “American Fiction,” “Nope,” “21 Bridges,” “Crash” and “There’s Something About Mary,” and on TV, he’s starred in “The Lowdown,” “The Gray House,” “Greenleaf,” “Abbott Elementary” and “Community.” Up next, he’ll appear opposite Vince Vaughn in the action film “Mike & Nick & Nick & Alice.” David is repped by Verve, DVFI Management and Meyer & Downs.

Goor and Del Tredici, best known for their work on “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” serve as executive producers in addition to writing the project. Akiva Schaffer is directing and executive producing the pilot. Universal Television is the studio.
