Technology journalist Joanna Stern will join NBC News as part of a new partnership between the reporter and the news organization, an arrangement that seems to be increasingly popular as more news personnel test out creator-driven ventures.

Stern, who recently departed The Wall Street Journal to pursue an independent business, will create what NBC News billed as “premium multimedia content” and also contribute reporting across NBC News platforms , as well as the NBCUniversal division’s its newly launched subscription product. Her efforts will include vertical videos, explainers and investigative stories, newsletters created by her own business; a new franchise series called “AI in America” that will appear across various NBC News outlets.

“This partnership reflects a new model of working with leading independent journalists and creators who bring distinctive voices, loyal audiences, and the ability to expand engagement across our platforms,? said Rebecca Blumenstein, president of editorial at NBC News, in a statement. “Joanna has attracted a wide following because of her extraordinary ability to make complex technology accessible to everyone, regardless of their level of expertise. She brings a deeply humanistic and often humorous perspective to how technology affects our lives.”

NBC News recently crafted a similar arrangement with Steve Kornacki, who was named chief data analyst in a deal that also leaves him free to seek roles outside of his duties tied to the media company.

Securing a deal with Stern was said to be of high interest to executives at NBC News, owing to her past coverage of artificial intelligence, which is increasingly becoming tied to many aspects of daily life. Stern has a book, “I Am Not a Robot: My Year Using AI to Do (Almost) Everything,” that is slated to be out May 2026.

Stern spent more than a decade at the The Wall Street Journal, most recently as senior personal technology columnist. She has also worked as technology editor at ABC News and a founder of The Verge.

She will appear on NBC in her new role on “Today” on Tuesday, March 24.
