ESPN‘s “SportsCenter” is getting out of the studio and taking things on the road.
The ESPN mainstay will go on tour, so to speak. starting on Friday, June 27, and will hit a different state each day for 50 consecutive days. The cross-country trek will mark the first time “SportsCenter” has tested such a stunt since 2005.
“’SportsCenter’ isn’t just a studio show — it’s part of the fabric of sports culture across the country, and we can’t wait for our anchors and other ESPN personalities to show up in people’s backyards as we celebrate the passion for sports that we all share,” said David Roberts, ESPN’s executive vice president and executive editor of sports news and entertainment, in a prepared statement.
ESPN has reason to meet its fans where they live. The Disney-backed sports giant plans to launch a new streaming service toward the fall, and is counting on the new broadband outlet to help it offset steady downturns in the linear cable subscribers who have fueled its corporate revenue for years.
The seven-week “SportsCenter” tour will find the show holding forth from high-profile athletic facilities as well as unique hometown events, while throwing a spotlight on local traditions. Segments from each stop will be featured not only on the linear “SportsCenter” program, but ESPN’s mobile app and social-media feeds. ESPN will offer details on locations and anchor assignments in coming weeks.
