Edko Films has acquired Hong Kong and Macau rights to “The Mage,” the latest feature from Josie Ho and Conroy Chan’s 852 Films, with a theatrical release planned for Q3–Q4 of this year.

Directed and written by Danny Pang, the filmmaker behind “The Eye,” the film is currently in post-production. 852 Films is introducing “The Mage” to international buyers at this year’s FilMart, with global rights retained by the company. Additional territory deals are expected to be announced in the coming months, as is the film’s festival launch.

The deal was negotiated by 852 Films executives Sindy Lam and Serena Aw together with Edko’s Mandy Lam.

Produced by Conroy Chan, “The Mage” stars Ho alongside Carlos Chan, German Cheung, Kathy Yuen, Sabrina Ng and Iman. Blending supernatural elements with action, suspense and special effects, the film centers on a criminal investigation into a series of unexplained killings.

Ho plays Lan Peiqing, a scavenger whose chance discovery of a body in a park resurfaces memories of a deeply buried trauma. A former spirit medium, Lan has carried the weight of having driven a young girl to her death, a guilt that has left her besieged by visions of the deceased. Seeking to atone, she roams the margins of society gathering items thought to be inhabited by restless spirits, guiding them toward peace.

Her path repeatedly intersects with that of police officer Huang Ming, who is working a case involving a series of deaths that appear, on the surface, to be accidents. As the two circle the same mystery from different angles, they gradually piece together that the deaths are the work of a calculated killer – a discovery that puts both their lives at risk.
