The China box office welcomed a new leader this past weekend as Warner Bros. and Legendary’s “A Minecraft Movie” debuted in first place with RMB105.5 million ($14.7 million) for the April 4–6 frame, according to Artisan Gateway.
The long-awaited live-action adaptation of the popular video game opened across China, scoring a solid start during the Qingming Festival period.
In second place, Meila Media’s “We Girls” debuted with $11.1 million. Directed by Feng Xiaogang, the drama follows Gao Yuexiang (played by Zhao Liying), who, in a desperate bid to afford a cochlear implant for her daughter, takes a reckless action that lands her in prison. There, she meets fellow inmates Hei Mei (Lan Xiya), Deng Hong (Chuai Ni), Hu Ping (Wang Ju), and Guo Aimei (Cheng Xiao). Despite their differing personalities, the women form a bond, supporting each other through adversity and refusing to bow to fate.
“Ne Zha 2,” now in its tenth weekend, continued its extraordinary run with $10 million, bringing its cumulative total to $2.11 billion. The Cococartoon-produced animated epic is the top-grossing film of 2025 by a wide margin and remains a fixture in the top three, with ongoing support from premium formats including Imax.
Fourth place went to “Mumu” from CKF Pictures, which earned $7.3 million in its first full weekend after a Thursday debut. The drama, directed by Mo Sha, follows a seven-year-old girl who grows up in a deaf community with her father and whose life is disrupted when her estranged mother returns and reintroduces her to the world of hearing. Its current cume stands at $9.9 million.
Rounding out the top five, “Fox Hunt,” a new release from Shanghai Film Group, opened to $3.4 million. The action film from Zhang Leo, led by superstar Tony Leung Chiu-wai and Yihong Duan, follows a team of Chinese investigators tracking economic fugitives.
Overall weekend box office revenue reached $52.5 million, helping to push China’s 2025 year-to-date total to $3.45 billion, a 42.2% increase over the same period last year. With “Ne Zha 2” still showing remarkable longevity and multiple new releases drawing in solid numbers, the market continues to demonstrate a strong recovery trajectory heading into the spring season.
