Laika has brought on “Captain Marvel” filmmakers Anna Boden and Ryan Fleck to adapt and direct a live-action film based on the soon-to-be-released novel “Atmosphere” by Taylor Jenkins Reid (“Daisy Jones and the Six”).
The Ballantine Books novel follows a romance between two pioneering female astronauts breaking into NASA in the early days of the shuttle program. The principal characters are fictionalized, while the historical context and world-building will be grounded in the “spirit” of films like “Apollo 13,” “The Right Stuff” and “Gravity,” according to Laika. The story is described as one that “shows the extraordinary lengths we go to in living and loving beyond our limits.”
“Atmosphere” is a Laika production in association with Circle M+P. Producers are Laika’s president and CEO Travis Knight, Laika’s president of live action film and series Matt Levin, Boden and Fleck, Jenkins Reid and Brad Mendelsohn. Jeremy Kipp Walker is executive producer.
Laika (“ParaNorman,” “Kubo and the Two Strings,” upcoming “Wildwood”) is a widely-known animation studio and is now building a live-action subsidiary with projects in development including a feature adaptation of action thriller novel “Seventeen” by screenwriter John Brownlow; and an original, “Crumble,” written and directed by Brian Duffield with Phil Lord and Chris Miller producing. Additionally Jon Spaihts (“Dune”) will write and make his directorial debut on an untitled original live-action film.
Emmy-winning directors, writers and producers Boden and Fleck are perhaps best known for their billion-dollar box office hit “Captain Marvel.” They made their feature debut in 2006 with “Half Nelson” starring Ryan Gosling. Their feature credits include “Sugar,” “It’s Kind of a Funny Story” and “Mississippi Grind.” Their latest film, “Freaky Tales,” is a genre-blending action comedy that premiered in 2024 at Sundance. In TV, their credits include “Mrs. America,” “Masters of the Air” and upcoming “Criminal” for Amazon Studios.
Reid is the author of bestselling novels “Carrie Soto Is Back,” “Malibu Rising,” “Daisy Jones and The Six” and “The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo.”
