Finecut has secured a raft of international sales for “What Does That Nature Say to You,” the latest contemplative drama from South Korean auteur Hong Sangsoo, who is currently serving as a jury member at this year’s Cannes Film Festival.
The sales outfit announced deals spanning multiple territories for the film, which world premiered in competition at the Berlinale earlier this year.
Finecut has closed deals for Austria and Switzerland (Filmgarten), China (Beijing Hugoeast Media for non-theatrical rights), Ex-Yugoslavia (Discovery d.o.o.), Finland (BKS Cinema), Japan (Mimosa Films), and U.K. (Institute of Contemporary Arts for theatrical rights). These deals follow previously revealed acquisitions in France (Arizona Films), Greece and Cyprus (Ama Films), Italy (Minerva Pictures), Spain (L’atalante Cinema), Taiwan (Cola Films), and the U.S. (The Cinema Guild).
The film stars Hong’s recent collaborators Ha Seongguk, Kwon Hyehyo and Cho Yunhee, who previously appeared in the director’s “A Traveler’s Needs” and “By the Stream.” The minimalist narrative follows a thirtysomething poet who, after dropping off his girlfriend at her home, unexpectedly spends the day with her family. His journey includes visiting a Buddhist temple, sharing a chicken stew prepared by her father, and revealing his true feelings after becoming intoxicated.
In addition, Finecut has sold “Noise,” described as a multi-sensory horror film exploring social themes of “floor noise.” The feature has been acquired for the Philippines (Pioneer Film) and Mongolia (Izagur Media LLC), building on earlier deals in Cambodia (Westec Media), CIS (Red Castle Group), France (KMBO), Indonesia (Prima Cinema Multimedia), Japan (Twin), Latin America (Great Movies), Malaysia and Brunei (Antenna Entertainment), Poland (Media4Fun), Taiwan (Cai Chang International), Thailand (Iris Cinema), and Vietnam (Lumix Media). Korean audiences can expect a wide theatrical release in early summer 2025.
The company’s Cannes slate also includes “Journey There,” starring Justin H. Min of Netflix’s “Beef,” “The Umbrella Academy,” and “After Yang,” which will receive its market premiere screening during Marché du Film. Other titles include director Park Hoon-jung’s action noir “Tristes Tropiques” featuring a multinational ensemble, and action-comedy “Boss” from prolific Korean production company Hive Media Corp. Finecut will present the first 30 minutes of both projects in private market screenings.
