“Final Destination Bloodlines” is expected to rule the box office, trouncing fellow newcomer, The Weeknd’s roman à clef thriller “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” and ending the two-week reign of Marvel’s “Thunderbolts.”
Warner Bros and New Line’s R-rated “Final Destination Bloodlines” is aiming for $35 million to $45 million from 2,800 North American theaters in its debut. The film is expected to collect another $35 million from 74 overseas territories for a global start of $70 million to $80 million. “Bloodlines” is the franchise’s first new installment in 14 years, since 2011’s “Final Destination 5” (which opened to $18 million, not adjusted for inflation).
Times and tastes have changed dramatically in the past decade and a half, but horror is still hot as ever the box office — hence why “Bloodlines” is projected to land the biggest debut of the series. The bloody, 25-year-old property centers on young people who escape impending death, only to be killed anyway in increasingly insane accidents. In “Bloodlines,” a family starts dying off one by one because their matriarch was never supposed to survive a horrific incident from 50 years ago.
“Final Destination” should overtake “Thunderbolts” for No. 1. Marvel’s latest superhero adventure has topped the box office for two consecutive weekends and is projected to add $15 million to $18 million in its third. “Thunderbolts” has grossed $127.7 million domestically and $271 million globally to date. The tentpole has been holding better than recent MCU installments, but “Thunderbolts” cost $180 million to produce and will struggle to get out of the red in its theatrical run without some serious staying power.
This weekend’s other new release is from Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye. “Hurry Up Tomorrow,” a companion piece to his studio album of the same name, may fizzle with $5 million to $7 million in its debut. Lionsgate is releasing the $15 million budgeted film in exchange for a distribution fee. The Weeknd stars as a fictionalized version of himself, an insomniac musician on the verge of a mental breakdown who is pulled into an existential odyssey by a stranger. Trey Edward Shults (“Waves”) directed the movie which co-stars Jenna Ortega and Barry Keoghan.
Based on projections, “Final Destination Bloodlines” will be the third consecutive hit for Warner Bros. The theatrical tides seem to finally be turning for the studio after a string of commercial flops including “Mickey 17,” “The Alto Knights” and “Joker: Folie à Deux.” Recent Warners releases “Sinners” and “A Minecraft Movie” will stay strong over the weekend, so Warner Bros. should impressively have three films in the top five. “Sinners” has generated a mighty $125 million domestically and $69 million internationally to date, while “A Minecraft Movie” has earned $408 million in North America and $501 million overseas.
Despite recent successes, overall box office revenues are trailing behind 2019 by roughly 33%, according to Comscore. Upcoming summer movies like “Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning” and “Lilo & Stitch” are hoping to close that gap.
